#CCSFocus Season Preview — Top 10

#CCSFocus

With the Central Coast Section kicking off it’s time to take a look at the teams that are going to stand out. COVID-19 has made changes to travel schedules so teams are focusing on playing teams located in the same or neighboring counties and leagues are looking different than the previous years. Just because the leagues and travel look different doesn't mean the game is changing. Coming off over a year of no high school baseball, we’re all excited to see what the talent looks like and I’m hoping to get out and see these teams (and others) in person during the season.

All this is just a guess until the players cross those white lines and put it out on the field so let’s look through the teams that I expect to be leading the Section in 2021. If you’ve got highlights, feel free to tag @OzellaBaseball on social media (Twitter/Instagram) and I’ll be sure to get it out for all to see.

  1. Valley Christian: It’s tough to be better than the previous couple of teams (2017–2019 Open Champions), but Coach Diatte has another LOADED squad with D1 Commits up and down the lineup and on the mound. The depth on the roster is crazy to look at and I’d argue by end of the season they could be the best team in Northern California and possibly the entire state.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 SS Trevor Haskins (Stanford Commit)
    - 2021 RHP/UTL Jonathan Cymrot (Kansas Commit)
    - 2021 OF Jeffrey Heard (Sac State Commit)
    - 2021 RHP/1B Griffin Allen (Grand Canyon Commit)
    - 2021 UTL Jaxson Wall (Grand Canyon Commit)
    - 2023 RHP/OF Jacob Hudson (TCU Commit)
    - 2023 RHP Alec Belardes (Fullerton Commit)
    - 2024 OF Tatum Marsh (Stanford Commit)
  2. Palo Alto: Bringing back a large group of experienced players from the 2021/2022 classes, the Vikings also have some talented younger players waiting in the wings and ready to help. The middle of the lineup is going to pack a punch and utilizing the overall depth in the lineup matched with some quality arms will give themself a chance each day out.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 SS Zander Darby (UCSB Commit)
    - 2021 C/INF Aiden Berger (UCLA Commit)
    - 2021 RHP Callum Olsen (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 OF Henry Bolte (Texas Commit)
    - 2022 RHP Danny Peters (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 INF Xavier Esquer (Uncommitted)
  3. Archbishop Mitty: The Monarchs are going to be bringing back a group of players that will keep them right near the top of the West Catholic League and their youth should add some fresh elements to this team who lost SS Nick Yorke to the Boston Red Sox. Coach Yocke’s team regularly improves as the season goes and 2021 should see the same as they get back on the field.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 OF/RHP Matthew Halbach (UCSD Commit)
    - 2021 RHP Jake Geis (Oregon Commit)
    - 2022 RHP Tristan Fox (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 C/INF Zach Yorke (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 INF Antonio Cabrera (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 UTL Jarren Advincula (Uncommitted)
  4. Los Gatos: Their 2021 class is loaded with talent and that group should carry this team both on the mound and offensively. Regularly one of the top teams in the section, the Wildcats have been close consistently and will need that Senior crew to bring it all together for 2021.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 RHP/C Tommy Splaine (Arizona Commit)
    - 2021 RHP Jimmy Moore (MIT Commit)
    - 2021 OF Logan Johnstone (Gonzaga Commit)
    - 2021 MIF Antonio Nanez (SF State Commit)
    - 2021 OF/RHP Teague Drotar
    - 2021 OF/LHP Michael Splaine
  5. Serra: One of the deeper lineups in the section with a lot of athleticism throughout the corner spots. How their pitching comes along will determine how far they go because you need pitching and defense to be successful in this Section. I like the bats and their ability to lock down on defense and could see this team making a late run.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 3B Thomas Gould (Santa Clara Commit)
    - 2021 OF Patrick Keighran (San Francisco Commit)
    - 2021 OF PK Walsh (Uncommitted)
    - 2021 C Nico Button (Uncommitted)
    - 2021 C/OF Joey Lee (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 OF/1B/LHP Will Bowen (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 MIF Ben Cleary (Santa Clara)
  6. Live Oak: The Acorns are going to pack a punch with three arms atop their rotation that are as good as they come and are committed to big-time schools. The offense has some guys that can hurt the baseball so how much they play defense and help their pitching staff will go a long way to how good they are this season.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 OF/1B PJ Kissee (Uncommitted)
    - 2021 1B/C Tyler Madden (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 LHP Trevor Kester-Johnson (UCSB Commit)
    - 2022 OF Justin Kester-Johnson (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 MIF Cole Wilson (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 RHP Landon Stump (Oregon Commit)
    - 2023 RHP Aiden Keenan (Cal Commit)
  7. Bellarmine: This is just me going with what I’ve seen. I think this team has a chance to turn into one of the better teams in the region as their 2023/2024 classes have been LOADED with talent. How quickly those guys become contributors on Varsity determines how long before the Bells become a threat for the area again. Their pitching this year will be very good so scoring runs will be the big question.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 RHP Stephen Kwak (Pomona-Pitzer Commit)
    - 2021 LHP Will Gnibus (Portland Commit)
    - 2022 RHP/SS Austin Turkington (Cal Commit)
    - 2023 3B/RHP Thomas Trombatore (Uncommitted)
    - 2024 RHP Ishan Kambal (Arizona Commit)
    - 2024 OF Rowan Kelly (Uncommitted)
    - 2024 RHP Wade Mountz (Uncommitted)
  8. Aptos: Another team whose pitching staff will be deep and talented, the Mariners could have as many as five arms in their rotation that can come in and get outs. For this team to make a jump they’ll have to find a way to score runs and execute so they’re not on the wrong end of a one-run game.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 RHP Nathaniel Brouse (Hawaii Commit)
    - 2021 OF/RHP Fisher Johnson (USC Commit)
    - 2022 RHP Reed Moring (UCSB Commit)
    - 2022 LHP/OF Owen Dueck (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 RHP/INF Gabe Gaeckle (Uncommitted)
  9. St. Francis: This is a team that could easily make a quick jump. The young talent is there and has been for the past couple of seasons but hasn’t been able to make the leap they probably could. Blending in youth and experience should have this year’s Lancers ready to make their run and re-establish themselves as one of the upper echelon teams in the West Catholic League.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 1B/OF Johnny Tarantino (Santa Clara Commit)
    - 2022 OF Wyatt King (Cal Poly Commit)
    - 2022 OF/RHP Tristan Kim (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 RHP Will Bonini (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 INF Christian Galvez (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 C/INF Ryan Lee (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 OF Max Ross (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 INF/C Eli Duncan (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 OF Derrick Gile (Uncommitted)
  10. Palma: The Chieftans were playing their best ball in 2020 before the season shut down and they’ll have to wait for some reinforcements out of Football. This might be a bit high now, but once they get to full strength and baseball speed Palma should be one of the better teams in the region.
    Notable Players:
    - 2021 OF/C JT Amaral (San Francisco Commit)
    - 2021 RHP Gianvito Carriglio (Uncommited)
    - 2022 INF Luke Rossi (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 INF Joe Cardinale (Uncommitted)
    - 2022 C/1B Gavin Ducker (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 C/INF Jayden Kim (Uncommitted)
    - 2023 OF Joey Barros (Uncommitted)

Other Notables: Los Altos, Mountain View, St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Menlo-Atherton, Carlmont, Half Moon Bay, San Benito, Branham, Willow Glen, The King’s Academy
